| Hi, 2009-08-09 Highest paved pass roads in the Alps updated: Col des Portes (1835m); Le Collet (1707m); Pas des Escaliers (1700m); La Croix (1700m); Col de Gleize/Chaudun (1696m); Passo Nigra/Nigerpass (1688m); Passo Campo Carlo Magno (1681m). All 190 passes now climbed. ______ 2008-01-25 Favourite climbs in the Alps updated. I just updated my list of the asphalt passes (at least one side) in the whole of the Alps above 1700 m. I am making the information more readable and up-to-date on all the climbs there right now and have gone through them all now Jan 6th 2009! http://Cycloclimbing.com/Questions and additions are welcome! Jerry

| Hi Michal,
Very nice photos!! -- have already (just now since you posted) looked at all the photos from year 2004, 2006 & 2007.
I have myself bicycled with a race bike up Colle Sommeiller; Viderjoch; Col di Val Alpisella etc. and I am a bit curious what of the other gravel roads you may think are possible to climb with a race bike (23 mm tires)? -- I am esp. wondering about Col du Jandri (that looks like it has become a better gravel road lately (most of it)); Col de la Montée du Fond and Fisserjoch. -- These roads seems like they may be possible with a race bike -- any thoughts on this? ( ... apart from that it would be much easier with an MTB, I understand ... .)
Thanks, Jerry
PS: Now I have looked at all -- missed several from Tremalzo, Monte Altissima (which I had wondered about whether I could go up this Summer but it does not look so good ...), Malga Palazzo etc. -- hope they fix the Barbara road as I plan to go there also ... .

| Col du Jandri is OK, if you can handle 40% ramps with your road gears This section occurs at 2550-2700 m altitude ... Later you have 30% several times and 40% final 200 meters nicely snapped here - 8 years ago http://www.centcols.org/libre_service/col_du_jandri.htmand recently http://web.ticino.com/rudaz/Jandri.htmIn 2007 summer road was excellent gravel. We managed 40% ramps continuosly cycling with consuming a lot of power and due the altitude or gravel it was little harder than 45% Malga Palazzo and much harder than Viderjoch from Idalpe Fisserjoch - no problem from FISS (this side is frequently visited by road cyclist). The other northern accesion to Fisserjoch is insane for road cyclists, especially 50% gradients on loose gravel are almost to tough to WALK in spd Col de la Montée du Fond - should be possible from Salins via Val Thorens. Good gravel road with somewhat 30 hairpins. You can try also Glacier Peclet with very scenic gravel - but please descent on the same road (don't try to descent on black XC trail, it was very hard for our MTB's). For 4 km you will see nothing but stones and rock. Impressive Don't try any of these 3000s immediately after rain 2800's - Chambery is easy for road bikes and Pointe de la Masse harder but still possible. Pointe de la Masse is an excellent scenic point. Jafferau in my opinion too difficult due bumpy road. Monte Altissimo - forget about cycling it with road bike. You will have to walk 2 hairpins... For me a good climb is that accession which I cycled in 100%. Walking, even short distance is not accepted I did Monte Altissimo cycling the whole climb but it consumed a lot of effort to fight this loose gravel. Try Malga Palazzo first, if you fight it up to the end of concrete strip wiht no push-bike, you can attack the rest of crazy roads with a lot of energy | |

We managed 40% ramps continuosly cycling with consuming a lot of power and due the altitude or gravel it was little harder than 45% Malga Palazzo and much harder than Viderjoch from Idalpe Sounds like some walking (but I don't mind walking (a little)) ... and I guess a problem might be that I will be around there a bit early in the Summer (mid-July). I saw these nice pages before and I also heard/seen that the road was good in 2007. Someone told me that there has even been thoughts of asphalting this road, to make sure the highest paved road is in France, I presume - michalk wrote:

The other northern accesion to Fisserjoch is insane for road cyclists, especially 50% gradients on loose gravel are almost to tough to WALK in spd Ok, will see if I can get Fisserjoch into my plan -- I am just around there in my planning right now so .... . - michalk wrote:

Interesting -- will see if it can be fit in as an option in my plan. - michalk wrote:

Ok, have to look at those photos again and locate the climb ... . - michalk wrote:

I know by experience ....... . Therefore it is easy to plan in and then skip with a good excuse. - michalk wrote:

Yes, I have several times looked at Monte Jafferau to try and understand just how difficult it might be, but seems like it is fairly difficult. I don't remember right now where Chambery & Pointe de Masse are located (will look for them). - michalk wrote:

Ok, I was thinking that maybe the road would be surfaced up to the 'La Sella'a small pass on this road marked on some maps and was curious. I have also tried to find out whether Bocca di Tredes Pin (the place where the lift from Malcesine comes up) could have been asphalted -- I found a document on the web that there has been plans on asphalting this road from Bocca di Navene to Tredes Pin, but it looks like it still isn't asphalt? - michalk wrote:

My attitude used to be that walking isn't allowed (at least not uphill), but I have become a bit more relaxed on this standard! (Also it could be nice walking for a change on a long tour -- sometimes when I have come back home from a long tour it felt like I had forgotten how to walk and got ache after only walking short distances.... . I was thinking of skipping Malga Palazzo, just because I know I would not be able to cycle all the way and instead try the nearby Monte Finonchio (to Serrada), which should be pretty difficult on a road bike also ... . It's nice to know there are always some gravel roads to try out on the race bike when asphalt roads are not hard enough . From my preliminary plan (some climbs from the first two weeks) (I am sure I will not do all, but planning is fun): Day 1: Passabocche 1297 Colle San Zeno 1434 Passo del Cavallino della Fobbia 1080 Day 2: Passo d’Erè 1131 Passo di Santa Barbara 1169 Bocca di Tratto Spino/Tredes Pin 1778 Day 3: Monte Finonchio 1577 Valico della Fricca 1112 Gfriller Sattel/Sella di Cauria 1414 Day 4: Passo Castrin/Hofmahdjoch (tunnel) 1706 Gasteiger Sattel/Sella dei Sentieri 2054 Day5: Maratona Day 6: Passo Nigra/Nigerpass 1688 Jëuf Ciaforn/Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi 1862 Day 7: Klammljoch/Passo di Gola 2288 Juel-Joch 1725 Maybe Limojoch/Passo di Limo/Ju de Limo 2174 Day 8: Passo del Pura 1425 Maybe Forcella Ielma 1902 Day 9: Sella di Razzo 1760 Passo di Col Caneva 1844 Forcella Morareeto/Morarêt 2120 Vetta delle Panoramica 1967 Day 10: Windische Höhe 1110 Turracher Höhe 1792 Sölkpass 1788 Day 11: Katschberghöhe 1641 Grosse Oschenikensee 2394 Weisssee 2378/Hochwurtenspeicher 2417 (was thinking of maybe walking over Kleinzirknitzscharte but) Day 12: Franz-Josefs-Höhe 2369 Edelweissspitze 2571 Kitzbühler Horn 1988 Day 13: Kerschbaumer Sattel 1111 Zillertaler höhenstrasse 2015 Day 14: Karawendelhaus/Hochalmsattel 1788 Hahntennjoch 1894 Raues Joch/Freiburger Hütte 1918 Day 15: Pillerhöhe 1559 Kaunertaler Gletscherstrasse 2751 etc. /Jerry

| Hello, Have posted pages for my Tour of the Alps at cycloclimbing.com now: http://cycloclimbing.com/tour2008/, but I have only made the writing ready for the first three days so far -- will work on the other pages as times permits, but at least you can find the photos and info on the passes for each day. Cheers, Jerry | |

I add it in the news of the website today. Thanks -- I was thinking to do so myself as I know I should be able to do so, but then got lost with other things when not directly finding the link to the website -- could we perhaps have a link from the forum to the regular website?? -- We could have a little gif or such with a link back in the header of the forum -- I think this would be a good idea! /Jerry
