| This summer I've planned a trip to Aosta valley and Piemonte. I'am looking for a good base for climbing BIGs. In the Aosta Valley I think Aosta is the best place for San Carlo, San Bernardo and Breuil-Cervinia. In Piemonte I think Susa is a good base. It's on the foot of Mont Cenis and Finstere and not far from Sommeiller and Colle Braida. Any of you suggestions for a good base? And maybe you know a good hollidayhouse or appartment overthere? | |

And maybe you know a good hollidayhouse or appartment overthere? Hi Martin, I am also thinking of visting Aosta (and the Alpe d'Huez area) this Summer. I would think that Susa in Piemonte is not a good base as it is really too hot down there, but the idea is of course not to stay there during the day ... so maybe, but I have not found it very charming while there, but maybe that is only good ... . Aosta is also very warm. I try and stay around 700-900 m altitude during the nights in the Summer -- warm enough to be able to go out with thin clothes and get the clothes dry in the morning, while not too hot for sleep ... . A good idea is usually to start somewhere a bit above a supposedly good starting point for trips -- then you could have a nice rolling start before the climbs starts in the morning! Just my thoughts ... . /Jerry | |
