For one thing, Hardknott pass is far steeper than any road around Tirano ...
scratch Hardknott and Wrynose are the only two passes where I have had to walk thus far because of steepness. Nice thing is that they are not long -- englishmen have not yet discovered serpentines! The roads are flat and then suddenly 25% then flat again and so on .... . Rolling Eyes Ambleside is nicely located and has a Youth Hostel that could be used to make tours from. Don't forget about the Peak District also, that have even steeper climbs according to rumours (and the highest passes in England). Maybe there is some information at the http://www.ocd.co.uk site on these climbs -- try this page: http://www.ocd.org.uk/guides/UK/lake_district.html

Good luck! The roads are very narrow also and therefore it is almost not possible to zig-zag up .... . (The weather is "english" -- it could rain.)

/Jerry

PS: Talking of Tirano .... what do you think of my idea to designate the road from Tirano via Trivigno and down to Edolo as a pass road? I think it clearly is such a pass road and quite a different one than going over Aprica or the Guspessa pass -- see: http://cycloclimbing.com/alpspass1700paved/158baitafoppa.html

Well, just like Jerry said, the succession of Wrynose and Hard Knott passes, whereever you come from, are terrible. In my souvenirs, eastern coming, the beginning of the Wrynose was steep and the end of the Hard Knott incredible. Some cars stop in front of me and I had to make a short zig-zag to avoid it but just like said, it's narrow. Just a little less steep : the Kirkstone from Ableside and the Honister Pass in the region have all sections over 20%. Good pleasure !

Ciao Jerry,

I agree with you that around Tirano there is no road with 33 % slope , but I can assure you that is A LOT MORE MORE DIFFICULT to climb Mortirolo or Gavia or Stelvio that 1 or 2 km of Hard Knott……

About Tirano…Trivigno…Monte Padrio….

I have passed my youngness in those places, so I know them very well……
There are a lot of choice to ride…..

1) you can do : Tirano – Mortirolo Pass (from Mazzo-the most famous road to Mortirolo many times in Tour of Italy ) - Guspessa Pass (every year my brother in law organise in july a lunch in Guspessa pass for Alpini Corps…) - Trivigno – Aprica or Edolo……

Detail :
Tirano – Mazzo km 15 all flat and for training……
Mazzo – Mortirolo km 10,4 average medium 10,5 % - max 20 %
Mortirolo – Guspessa km 10 almost all flat because you are on the edge of the mountain
Guspessa - Trivigno km 6 easy
Trivigno – Aprica (or Edolo) all downhill…

The page you send me http://cycloclimbing.com/alppass1700paved/158baitafoppa.html
Is about MONTE PADRIO CLIMB ……a wonderful (and hard) climb from LOMBRO
(on the road Aprica-Edolo)

You can climb this and then to do the one I tell you above, in the other sense……..
In this way :
Tirano - Aprica km 16 … average 6,5 %
Aprica - Lombro crossino … downhill
Lombro crossing - Trivigno…. Hard climb 9,5 % average….max 20-25 %...km 9,50
Trivigno - Guspessa - Mortirolo……easy
Mortirolo – Mazzo ….downhill
Mazzo - Tirano……km 15 flat

Then there is on the Valtellina side another road for Mortirolo Pass …is from Grosio…..
Km 14…….average 8,7 % (less hard that one from Mazzo)

Lot of choice.......when you have decided what to do……email me …..it is a pleasure help a cyclist…..
Ciao
Mauro

Hi Mauro,

Yes, I know all that -- as I climbed all those roads around Tirano (well, not *all* of them yet). The difference between Hardknott and Mortirolo is that you may have to walk on Hardknott, but on Mortirolo you could ride up (and suffer ... Smile ). Cheers, Jerry

Professional amateur then king the pros are really in a totally different class. The biggest problem is being really good uphill in pro cycling and its a big problem ... Smile . I know a guy here in town that I used to train with, who was like number 20 in the World championship i Moscow for U23 class 2 years ago and he has beaten TdF/Giro riders -- he can easily get away from me even on perfectly flat roads, so ... . But I do like just amateur riding in mountain (even if I am better on flat roads) -- I don't think cycling is so much about competing, that's part of it, but only a little one in my mind. Cheers, Jerry (PS: I was somewhat happy with 6h 30mins on the GF Pantani in 2006 -- most people could do that if they train a little.)
